Introduction

Electrolytes have become one of the most heavily marketed areas of modern sports nutrition and wellness. What was once a relatively specific tool for certain endurance athletes has increasingly been reframed as an everyday requirement for hydration, energy, focus, productivity, and general health optimisation.

But how much of this messaging is grounded in physiology, and how much is an example of industry taking a real mechanism and extending it far beyond the evidence?

In this episode, we examine why many common use cases are unlikely to require an electrolyte product. Along the way, we explore how wellness marketing, biohacking culture, diet communities, and social media narratives can turn narrow sports nutrition applications into broad claims that many people come to accept as true.

To discuss this topic, Danny is joined by Zoe Rom, a science and environmental journalist,  and Kylee Van Horn, a sports dietitian, to discuss how these claims are shaped by marketing, culture, and the attention economy.

Edit – Host Note: In the episode a hypothetical example was given in which a naturopath was used to represent a typical source of pseudoscientific advice around electrolytes. While understanding the idea of the example, I (Danny) wish to acknowledge that the incorrectly insinutates that naturopaths as a general class make poor recommendations or are not evidence-based and I should have interjected and provided that nuance to the comment made. Knowing many excellent NDs, as well as the distinctions based on juristiction, this is clearly not the case and requires a correction here.

Zoë Rom is a journalist and elite ultrarunner whose work sits at the intersection of endurance sport, nutrition, science communication, and outdoor culture.

Over the past several years, she has reported on running, nutrition, and the outdoors, with work appearing in outlets including The New York Times, Outside, NPR, and Trail Runner. Alongside her media work, Rom brings first-hand experience from high-level endurance sport, with podium finishes at races including the Leadville 100, Run Rabbit Run 100, and Rio Del Lago 100.

She is also co-host of Your Diet Sucks, a podcast that examines nutrition science, fitness trends, diet culture, and pseudoscience.

Kylee Van Horn is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and sports dietitian specialising in nutrition for runners, triathletes, ultrarunners, and other endurance athletes.

She is the founder of FlyNutrition, where she works with athletes to develop practical, individualised fueling strategies that support both performance and long-term health. Her areas of focus include race fueling, gastrointestinal issues in endurance sport, low energy availability, RED-S, disordered eating, eating disorders, and helping athletes navigate nutrition misinformation without becoming obsessive or overly restrictive.

She is a co-host of the Your Diet Sucks podcast.

Useful Terminology

Electrolytes
Charged ions involved in physiological processes such as fluid balance, nerve signalling, muscle contraction, and cellular function. The term mainly refers to sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, and calcium.
Fluid loss rate
The amount of fluid lost per hour during exercise, typically through sweat. This is distinct from sweat sodium concentration; both are needed to estimate total sodium loss during training or competition.
Sweat sodium concentration
The amount of sodium contained in a given volume of sweat, usually expressed per litre. A person can have a high sweat rate, a high sweat sodium concentration, or both, but these are not interchangeable.
Hyponatremia
A potentially serious condition in which blood sodium concentration becomes too low. In endurance sport, this is often discussed in relation to excessive fluid intake diluting blood sodium, particularly during prolonged events.
Sodium sweat test
A test used to estimate an individual’s sodium concentration in sweat.
Mechanistic extrapolation
The process of taking a true biological mechanism, such as sodium’s role in muscle contraction or magnesium’s role in metabolism, and extending it into a practical claim that has not been demonstrated, such as “this supplement will improve focus, weight loss, sleep, or performance.”
Hydration-maxxing
A cultural pattern in which people intentionally consume very large amounts of water or hydration products in the belief that more hydration is inherently better.
Wellness biohacking
A marketing and belief system in which small interventions are framed as having large effects on productivity, energy, metabolism, athletic performance, or general optimisation.

Electrolytes as Biological Necessities vs Commercial Wellness Products

Electrolytes are physiologically important, but biological necessity does not automatically imply a widespread need for supplementation. The commercial electrolyte market often begins with a valid premise, then extends it into claims that are broader, more urgent, and less evidence-based than the physiology justifies.
