His research aims to improve our understanding of the nutrient status of populations, and interventions in agriculture and food systems to improve human nutrition. Currently his work seeks to gain insights on population nutrient status through the integration of large-scale datasets on food consumption and composition, and subsequent spatial and socioeconomic analyses.
Danny Lennon has a master’s degree (MSc.) in Nutritional Sciences from University College Cork, and he is the founder of Sigma Nutrition.

- Nutrient Density (of crops) – The concentration of nutrients (especially micronutrients like minerals or vitamins) in the edible portion of a crop, typically expressed as amount of nutrient per unit weight of food. In this context it refers to how much micronutrient is present in a given quantity of crop yield (e.g., milligrams of zinc per kilogram of wheat grain).
- Soil Health – A broad term describing the quality and condition of soil, in terms of its ability to sustain plant life (crop yield and health) and environmental functions. It encompasses soil fertility (nutrient availability for plants), organic matter content, structure, biodiversity, and capacity to retain water and nutrients.
- Green Revolution – A period during the mid-20th century (roughly the 1960s–1970s) when agriculture saw dramatic increases in crop yields worldwide due to the introduction of high-yielding varieties of staple crops (such as semi-dwarf wheat and rice), coupled with intensive use of fertilizers, irrigation, and pesticides.
- Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) Fertilization & Dilution Effect – Elevated CO₂ in the atmosphere can stimulate plant growth (since CO₂ is a raw material for photosynthesis), known as the CO₂ fertilization effect. The carbon dilution effect refers to the observed phenomenon that when plants grow larger or produce higher yields due to extra CO₂, the concentration of minerals in the plant tissue tends to decrease (the nutrients are diluted by the extra carbohydrate and biomass).
- CRISPR Gene Editing – A modern genetic technology (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) that allows scientists to make precise, targeted changes to an organismʼs DNA. In crop breeding, CRISPR can be used to edit genes that influence nutrient uptake, transport, or storage in plants.
